The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that in 2007, one out of nine traffic fatalities resulted from a collision involving a large truck. Also, of the 413,000 large trucks involved in traffic crashes in the United States, 4,584 involved fatal crashes. In 2007, a total of 4,808 people were killed accounting for 12% of all traffic fatalities. Additionally, 101,000 people were injured in collisions with large trucks.
In 2007, eighty-three percent of those killed in large truck accidents were not passengers of the truck. Additionally, large trucks were much more likely to be involved in a fatal multiple-vehicle crash – as opposed to a fatal single-vehicle crash – than were passenger vehicles (82% of all large trucks involved in fatal crashes compared with 59% of all passenger vehicles).
